1 Presto 06857 Review

Whether you need an electric skillet to feed a hungry family or to entertain big crowds on a camping trip, the Presto 06857 could be it. It can hold food for up to eight people – or six of huge appetite – and cooks things evenly thanks to the perfectly distributed temperature.

Stylish lines and brushed chrome details make it aesthetically appealing, and we also like that it’s very easy to clean. The skillet and lid are dishwasher friendly, which is a big plus when you’re busy.

But what gives true value is its foldable feature. Remove the base, fold down the handles, and pack everything compactly in the skillet pan for transport or storage. It takes up little space in a kitchen cabinet, and it can surely come with you when you’re tailgating.

Another great detail is the built-in spout for pouring sauces and other liquids, and that doubles as a convenient spatula holder. No doubt, all these extra features really deserve the slightly higher premium.

2 Presto 06852 Review

Maintaining most best-in-class features, the Presto 06852 could be the perfect electric skillet for your kitchen. It is not foldable, and it misses the built-in spout, but it comes at a more attractive price.

Despite lacking those optional features, this electric skillet provides the perfect temperature distribution. It also comes with a removable thermostat that lets you go from warm to 400°F, and it’s big enough to hold enough food for a family of eight.

A stylish, heavy-cast aluminum base and handles double it as a buffet server. When the feast is over, we like that all you have to do is remove the thermostat, and both skillet and lid can go straight into the dishwasher.

With best-in-class cooking performance and capacity, this electrical skillet is an excellent choice for busy families.

3 NESCO ES-08 Review

If you don’t have to feed large crowds but just one or two people, the NESCO ES-08 could be the right electric skillet. It comes at a price that can’t be beaten, although it misses a few high-class features.

A slight downside is that it’s not dishwasher friendly, except for the lid. Thanks to the nonstick interior though, it’s still quite easy to clean. At only 800 watts, it’s also a tad less powerful than its bigger counterparts.

Despite its lower power, though, we like that it has a deep interior. It’s perfect for making a small roast, and it even comes with adjustable temperature control.
Compact, performing, and inexpensive, this electric skillet is perfect for small households or for the elderly who want to be independent.

Types of electric skillets

An electric skillet is a great kitchen gadget. It’s an alternative to the oven in most cases, and you can use it for cooking a lot of dishes, from simple breakfasts and pancakes to roasts, casseroles, and lasagnas. The first thing to decide before buying is the type of skillet you want.

  • Aluminum electric skillet: Often coated with Teflon or other nonstick materials, aluminum electric skillets heat up as fast as they cool down, cooking food quickly and easily. Due to the thin material, the distribution of heat may not be optimal in entry-level models. Nevertheless, these skillets are usually inexpensive.
  • Stainless steel electric skillet: May or may not be coated with nonstick materials. Stainless steel conducts heat better than aluminum, but these models are usually more expensive.
  • Cast iron electric skillet: Cast iron is another popular material. These electric skillets are usually coated with ceramic and impress with their excellent heat distribution. You’ll have to wait for a while for the skillet to heat up though, and these models are also very heavy.

Electric skillet shape and size

Electric skillets come in various shapes and sizes that can meet all cooking needs and countertop spaces. Square and rectangular models are popular and particularly suitable for cooking lasagnas.

Regarding the size, you can typically choose from the following three options:

  • Small electric skillet: It usually has between 8 and 10 inches, and it is ideal for one or two people. Some models are so compact that they fit perfectly in a suitcase; these skillets are usually perfect for those who travel often, students, single professionals, and the elderly who want to remain independent. However, they are less suitable for a family.
  • Medium electric skillet: Typically measuring from 12 to 14 inches, a medium electric skillet is perfect for small families. It can usually hold food for four to six people, and it is perfect for smaller households.
  • Large electric skillet: Measuring 16 inches or over, this size is ideal for families of six or more. Depending on the actual size, a large electric skillet can hold enough food for eight or ten people, making it ideal for parties and gatherings.

Heating element

Another essential thing to consider is the heating element. Some skillets only have a heating element that surrounds the surface; these typically provide an uneven heat distribution, leaving the center of the skillet slightly cooler than the edges.

Most rectangular and square electric skillets have serpentine heating elements that cover most of the surface, ensuring a better heat distribution.

However, you should pay attention to cheaper aluminum skillets that usually get much hotter in the places where the serpentines are located. Due to this disadvantage, these models could partially burn your food if you don’t pay attention during the cooking process.

Temperature control

Electric skillets have thermostats that go from about 200°F to 400°F, although some models go up to 450°F. Some of the best electric skillets also have a warm function you can use to keep your goodies at serving temperature or to warm up leftovers.

When choosing your skillet, we recommend picking one with the widest temperature range you can find, as 400°F is usually not hot enough for deep frying. If you don’t plan to deep fry anything in your skillet, use the guide below to decide which is the best electric skillet for you.

Electric skillet temperature guide

Most electric skillets come with recipe booklets that contain temperature indications. If your model doesn’t come with a booklet, consult the table below to find the cooking temperature for some of the most popular electric skillet recipes.

Cleaning ease

One thing many people overlook when buying an electric skillet is the cleaning ease. Just like the electric griddles and air fryers, this appliance can be easy to clean or a complete nightmare.

The best electric skillets should have a quality nonstick surface that makes cleaning easier. Those skillets with removable thermostat are usually easier to clean than those with fixed thermostat because more often than not they can be immersed in water.

Some electric skillets are also dishwasher safe. Needless to say, they are your best bet if you want to minimize cleaning as much as possible.

Other important features

Besides the above, there are a few other important things you should check before buying.

  • High sides: Enhance the versatility of your electric skillet, giving you the possibility to cook a wider variety of foods, including casseroles and lasagnas.
  • Dome-shaped glass lid: If you want a skillet to cook mostly roasts, get one with a dome-shaped glass lid. The dome shape maximizes the cooking space. The glass lid is important in all circumstances, allowing you to check the food without taking it off.
  • Air vent: Most foods made in an electric skillet produce steam, which can cause the lid to fly off the skillet unless it has a way to escape. Furthermore, an air vent also prevents the food from getting soggy.
  • Built-in spout: Lets you pour sauces, gravies, and other liquids easier and without making a mess. Most spouts also double as spatula holders.
  • Cool-touch handles Another important thing you shouldn’t underestimate. Cool-touch handles will let you move the skillet while still hot, so you can use it as a warm buffet server.
  • Easy storage: Also consider the storage space before buying. Some electric skillets can fold compactly, enhancing storage ease.
  • Energy efficiency: Electric skillets can output anywhere between 800 and 1,800 watts, sometimes even more. This could have a high impact on your electricity bill unless you get an energy efficient skillet.
